I personally am not the biggest fan of Playa Del Carmen. I don’t enjoy being so hot and sweaty that you need to take a shower almost every time you come back inside. Beach culture is great, but after a while it gets a bit old considering the majority of people there are only around for a couple of months at a time max.

But PDC does stand out as the only "big" city in the Riviera Maya that isn't solely fixated on tourism. Unlike Cancun, Tulum, etc., it has grown a relatively decent local population and has a slightly more small-town feel compared to other areas. The beaches are relatively clean, unlike Tulum, and if you want to branch out and network, it's a great place to meet entrepreneurs and such.

For those who are interested in moving to Mexico but haven’t got the travel experience to fully jump into an unknown city, PDC is a perfect place to start out. For the digital nomad side of things, I would argue it has a comparison to Southeast Asian nomad hubs as well, while still being a great destination for families.

In this guide, I’ll talk about Budgets, Places to stay, Things to do & see, Bars & nightlife.
