Aggregators
The easiest way to find cheap flights today is simply to use flight aggregators - The problem is that not all of them are the same - So here are my favorites.

SkyScanner
My favorite thing about SkyScanner is its option for simply search everywhere. If you just want to fly somewhere, and want to figure out a range. Skyscanner will give you an easy drop down list of countries and cities starting by their cheapest flight. I often use this to find quick getaways.

Skiplagged
Skiplagged also has an anywhere feature, but its bread is butter is showing hidden city flights.
Lets say you want to fly from Washington DC to Mexico City. A direct flight might cost you 1000 dollars. A flight with a layover in Miami might be 600.
Skiplagged will tell you that a flight to Guanajuato Mexico is 300, with a 6 hour layover in Mexico City.

The only catch is that your can only travel with a carry-on bag. Instead of boarding the next flight to Guanajuato, you simply leave the airport in Mexico City.
* I don’t recommend doing this often with the same airline. That being said, I use this multiple times a year alternating use of different airlines.

Flight/RouteMaps - Isolating Airline Hubs
If you have brand loyalty, most airlines have a flight map section that doesn’t get used often.
If you are looking to optimize cost, its best to know where the Airline has a hub.
Flying out of the hub is always cheaper.
If you understand that Atlanta has a Delta Hub, then it may be cheaper to book a flight to Atlanta and a second flight to your destination
